In 2017 we expanded our programming to include more options for bicycle education.

To celebrate Bike Month in May, the Bike Library hosted a four-week class free of charge through the Senior Center with students meeting at the Bike Library for instruction on safe riding and route planning, touring the local bike shops, and taking a group ride around the lake at Terry Trueblood Recreation Area.

This year we started Womxn-Trans*-Femme Night, cheekily known as W/T/F, part of a nationwide movement to provide free or low-cost education opportunities and open shop time for woman-identified and gender-nonconforming individuals led by mechanic-instructors who fit the same description.

We have expanded volunteer-mechanic training for checkout bikes and kids’ bikes. During rent-a-bench hours patrons may use our tools and equipment for $5 per hour and have access to instruction from experienced volunteer mechanics.

We’re excited to announce that in 2018, in partnership with the Neighborhood Centers of Johnson County, we will offer after-school instruction for K–3 students on bicycle riding safety.

We are also developing a mobile bike repair outfit to make our off-site visits all the more efficient and effective.

As you may have heard, the Bike Library is facing a huge challenge in 2018. Our space at 700 S. Dubuque St. is slated for development, our lease ending this winter. This will be our third move since 2014, which places a strain on our dedicated volunteers and limits our ability to fulfill our mission.

In this time of growth and further transition, we need your support more than ever. Your tax-deductible donation will go towards our education and equity efforts as well as to sustain our mission as we move to a new location. Donations can be made via Paypal, to our mailing address at PO Box 2870, Iowa City IA 52244, or in person during our open hours at our shop location at 700 S. Dubuque St.

The Bike Library accepts donations of complete bikes, partial bikes, bike parts and accessories.

Donations are tax-deductible, and a receipt is available upon request.
